Passiflora incarnata – Native Maypop Passionflower with Tropical Flair
Passiflora incarnata, commonly known as Maypop or purple passionflower, is a hardy native passionflower vine with exotic lavender-purple blooms that look tropical but are right at home in much of the Southeast. The intricate flowers are showy, fragrant, and highly attractive to pollinators, making this an excellent choice for trellises, fences, arbors, native plantings, and pollinator gardens.
Unlike many tropical passionflower hybrids, Maypop is a true perennial in many areas and often dies back to the ground in winter before “popping” back up in spring. Plants may also produce oval green fruits that ripen to yellowish tones, with aromatic pulp inside. Fruiting can vary depending on pollination and growing conditions, so this vine is best enjoyed for both its flowers and its wildlife value.
