Hedychium coronarium – White Butterfly Ginger
Bring a tropical look—and incredible fragrance—to the garden with Hedychium coronarium, commonly known as White Butterfly Ginger. Tall, lush stems of broad green foliage are topped in late summer and fall with clusters of large, pure white, butterfly-like flowers. The blooms are intensely fragrant, especially in the evening, making this a wonderful choice near patios, walkways, and outdoor living spaces.
Plants form vigorous clumps and typically reach 4–6 feet tall when established. White Butterfly Ginger grows best in sun to partial shade with rich, consistently moist soil. In colder parts of its range, the foliage may die back after frost and return from the rhizomes in spring.
A dramatic choice for tropical gardens, pond edges, rain gardens, or anywhere you want bold foliage followed by a memorable late-season floral display.
