Dionaea muscipula – The Classic Venus Flytrap
Dionaea muscipula, the iconic Venus Flytrap, is one of the most fascinating carnivorous plants in the world. Native to a small region of the Carolinas, this insect-eating wonder uses rapid trap movement to capture prey like flies, spiders, and ants. Each trap has sensitive trigger hairs that snap shut when touched, making it both functional and fun to observe.
This species produces rosettes of green leaves, each tipped with a toothed trap that may develop red coloration inside under strong light. It’s perfect for sunny windowsills, greenhouses, or outdoor container gardens in the right climate.
🪴 Shipped in: 3.5-inch wide x 5-inch tall pot (unless state regulations require bare-root shipping)
📏 Plant Size at Maturity: Rosette typically grows 4 to 6 inches wide
☀️ Light: Full sun (6+ hours per day for best coloration and trap function)
💧 Water: Only use distilled, rain, or reverse osmosis water; keep soil constantly moist
🌱 Soil: Nutrient-poor, acidic medium (such as peat moss and perlite)
🌡️ Hardiness: Zones 7–10 outdoors; grow indoors elsewhere
This plant is nursery-propagated and grown—never wild-collected. Each specimen is carefully cultivated to ensure vigor and health. Photos are representative of the plant you will receive; individual variation is natural unless otherwise noted.
⚠️ Dormancy Notice:
Venus Flytraps naturally go dormant from October to March. During this period, growth slows, leaves may blacken and die back, and the plant will appear smaller. This is normal and essential for long-term health. Dormant plants will resume active growth in spring.
